Dolby ‘Hiss Region’ Installation

Client: Dolby
Year: 2015
Role: Designer

Dolby commissioned a handful of artists from around the world to create largescale wall-installations for their San Francisco headquarters. Tasked to create a visualization of Dolby’s sound technology, my piece brings to life the “hiss region” found in Dolby Atmos® — the first professional system for multitrack recording. The highest two tracks overlap creating the ‘hiss region,’ which must be processed more heavily than the other tracks.

Here, five separate multitrack recordings with the hiss region (identified by red) take on multiple forms next to bass (green) and mid-range (white) frequencies. Geometric and minimal, the work harks back to post-painterly abstraction.
